A zero-click search is a search query the user never clicks a result for, because the answer appears directly on the results page — a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, or an AI-generated summary — without the user needing to visit any site. As AI Overviews and AI answer engines have grown, a larger share of searches end this way: a SparkToro and Similarweb study, reported by Search Engine Land in mid-2026, put US Google zero-click searches at roughly 68% in the first four months of 2026, up from about 60% in 2024.
Why it matters for GEO
If a growing share of searches never produce a click, being cited inside the answer itself becomes more valuable than ranking for a click that increasingly doesn't happen. That's the practical argument for GEO work: influencing what appears in the zero-click answer, rather than only competing for a shrinking pool of clicks below it.
